Speaker 3 00:00:46 Going on? Live Oak. How we doing baby? Y'all can get louder than that. It's Tuesday. They got good drink specials. Live Vo. How we doing? Let's
Speaker 1 00:00:53 Go.
Speaker 2 00:00:55 All right. So, as Kurt said, this is our first ever live podcast here at Live Oak, and we're super excited for y'all to be out here for us. We know you want to hear music, so we're not gonna talk for that long. And we're gonna have two of our friends from the takeover here playing, uh, talking to us, that are playing later on tonight. So, uh, we're thankful for you guys being here early. And I'd like to thank Crown Head cigars for giving me a little bit of a nicotine buzz that I have right now. They're one of our sponsors. God bless you, crown Head cigars. Yes.
Speaker 1 00:01:24 I would like to thank Bud Light for giving me a little bit of an alcohol buzz tonight. So thank you Bud Light. Appreciate y'all <laugh>.
Speaker 2 00:01:31 Um, Matt is a good buddy of ours. He runs a podcast called In The Round Podcast, if you're familiar with it. Um, we've had him on the Raise Rowdy podcast once.
Speaker 3 00:01:41 Yeah, just no, once,
Speaker 2 00:01:42 Yeah. As a guest. And, uh, I'm super excited to be doing more live podcasts with the family, Kurt, who you may or may not know from photographs or playing lead guitar, steel guitar, mandolin, everything with strings pretty much now for a guy named Luke Combs.
Speaker 1 00:01:59 Hell yeah. Good to see y'all. <laugh>. Woo. Hey, thanks.
Speaker 2 00:02:03 Um, but we'd really like to thank WME for partnering with us on this event. Yeah.
Speaker 3 00:02:07 Shout out W m e Yeah. In the house.
Speaker 2 00:02:09 Big round of applause for those guys. Yeah. And there's Josh Terry. He's a podcast guy too. He's way funnier than we are.
Speaker 3 00:02:16 <laugh>.
Speaker 2 00:02:17 But, uh, I think probably let's have our first guest come up. Yeah.
Speaker 3 00:02:20 So we've got two folks, uh, joining us that are playing in the WME takeover, of course, the w e roster. Incredibly talented. And, uh, we've got some, some young talents, some new faces that, um, have been blowing things up all across the country, music, uh, world. And, uh, we're gonna kick it off with our good friend Y'all. Welcome to the stage, our girl Laney Gardner. Give it up for
Speaker 1 00:02:44 Howie. Hey, good to meet you. Good to meet you.
Speaker 2 00:02:48 Premium accommodations up here. Yes. Thank you for being a part of it. Absolutely. Lady. How you doing? This is our, uh, premium content gear. All right.
Speaker 3 00:02:55 Premium <laugh>.
Speaker 2 00:02:57 Well, welcome to, uh, the Razor Rowdy podcast. Thank you. Thank you.
Speaker 4 00:03:01 Absolutely. And I was little, I was looking at all the chords up here. I was like, they've got a booby trap, so I gotta make sure not to trip and fall on stage.
Speaker 2 00:03:08 We just flanked ourselves with coolers, you know, it's pretty on brand first. Oh yeah.
Speaker 4 00:03:11 <laugh> <laugh>.
Speaker 2 00:03:13 So, uh, tell us a little bit about yourself. Where did you start your musical journey and how did you get here to Nashville, Tennessee
Speaker 4 00:03:21 From, uh, Burnsville, North Carolina? Um,
Speaker 1 00:03:24 I was just in Burnsville like two weeks ago.
Speaker 4 00:03:26 Burnsville? Yes. Really?
Speaker 1 00:03:28 Yes. That is so weird. For what? I was, uh, in a cabin, just hanging out vacation, just hanging my parents. Yeah, it's beautiful there. It is in the middle of nowhere.
Speaker 4 00:03:36 It is in the middle of nowhere in a valley of mountains. So there's not much, uh, opportunity for music. A lot of people. Yeah,
Speaker 1 00:03:44 A lot of people. There are like preppers, like prepping for the apocalypse. Really? Yes. Really?
Speaker 4 00:03:48 Yeah. Yeah. Preppers. Yeah. I grew up my, uh, you said preppers, right? Yeah. Like m
Speaker 1 00:03:55 Say preppers.
Speaker 4 00:03:55 Yeah. I just made sure. Yeah. My memo before I just started in on a irrelevant story. Um, my memo actually had, um, like cans of like green beans and peppers, like in like the basement of her house. And, um, I think I, I can't remember when it was, but it was a like a, this big blizzard of whatever year. And since then she's like canned all of this stuff. So just in case there's another blizzard.
Speaker 1 00:04:23 I know, like if a zombie of holo comes a lot of snow up there, I'm coming to your Mammaw's house for sure. <laugh> got a
Speaker 4 00:04:28 Mamaw. We got you. We got some green beans. Yeah.
Speaker 2 00:04:31 Uh, are you, I'm assuming you're putting those in Mason jars, is that correct? Oh yeah. Oh yeah. Yeah. So you use that for something else other than just like the clear liquor, right? Yeah.
Speaker 4 00:04:39 <laugh> moonshine,
Speaker 2 00:04:40 North Carolina. You can probably do that.
Speaker 3 00:04:41 Yeah. Carolina can.
Speaker 4 00:04:42 We had moonshine in our sippy cups. <laugh>.
Speaker 3 00:04:45 What was, uh, what was your local scene? Uh, coming up doing music in North Carolina, cuz there's so many venues that are out there. Everybody does shows in like Charlotte and Raleigh. Yeah. And, and Asheville. There's so many great places to play. So, coming up, what was your musical experience like before you came out here?
Speaker 4 00:05:00 I didn't, I didn't really play anywhere in Burnsville. There's like, there wasn't any venues before then. Oh, okay. Um, now we've got like one bar there that we can like go and play out, but we always went to the, the orange pill in Asheville. Yeah. If anybody's familiar with that. But that's actually Moe Pitney is coming up here to sing later. And that was the first time I think I went to the orange pill. And so when I saw that Moe Pitney was on this, this round, I was like a little bit fan girl. And I'm like, man, I was in middle school when I saw you, man. Like, that's so freaking cool. I don't know if he's here yet, but I'm excited to meet him. So <laugh> orange pills is where we saw everything.
Speaker 1 00:05:36 Burnsville is like such a small place. It's like they don't even have a midwife. Like, you have to like go to a different town to give birth. Oh yeah. <laugh>. Yeah. It's like really small.
Speaker 4 00:05:44 Yeah. There's a, there's a, there's a hospital in, in Spruce Pine that's about, you know, probably like 15 minutes from us, but not a lot of people go there. We always go to Ashville.
Speaker 1 00:05:55 I definitely feel like I can hear some of that, that Appalachian sound like in some of your songs for sure. Yep.
Speaker 4 00:06:00 Yep. We've got a, we've got a couple songs coming up that talks a lot about where I'm from and, um, just the sound of the instruments. We have a lot of like bluegrass in there and
Speaker 1 00:06:09 I can hear that for sure. Yeah, I know like you have some stuff online that's like, kind of like, like the, the cover song of course, like the dance free mix or whatever. But I could definitely hear like some of your stuff being played like straight ahead, like bluegrass, like easy. Yeah. Like you can get Mo Pitney and all his buddies together and put a record out Easy. Yeah.
Speaker 2 00:06:26 Yeah.
Speaker 1 00:06:26 Burnsville tapes.
Speaker 4 00:06:27 I, I'm excited. I'm excited. I'm, I I really do wanna kind of bring Bluegrass back to the mainstream I think of country. So these do,
Speaker 1 00:06:35 Yeah, like I love that Dirk's Bluegrass record is fire. Yeah. Oh yeah, <laugh>. I know. It's so good. So I want to hear more of that.
Speaker 2 00:06:44 So yeah, what do you guys have coming out? So like you have some music in the tank that you can talk about mm-hmm. <affirmative>.
Speaker 4 00:06:49 Most, most of it's, it's got that bluegrass in it, but there's a lot of, uh, there's a lot of rock influences in there as well. Um, and then there's, there's literally just, you know, what, how I interpreted Blue Grass and Country and just mountain music altogether. So we've literally got a song called, uh, well, I don't know if I'm allowed to say it.
Speaker 1 00:07:11 You can say it.
Speaker 4 00:07:12 It's Mountains and Miller <laugh> Race.
Speaker 1 00:07:14 Rodney Exclusive. Oh, whoa. I didn't know what you were going there. <laugh>. Sorry.
Speaker 4 00:07:17 We can bleep the, the, the other word out <laugh>.
Speaker 2 00:07:22 Um, so who you have producing your stuff?
Speaker 4 00:07:25 Um, it's kind of all over the board. Um, I produced a lot of my stuff with, uh, Logan Maggio. Um, he's my age and he's kind of an upcoming producer and kind of just trying to make it in Nashville. I think he just moved out to LA to kind of, you know, test his luck out there.
Speaker 1 00:07:42 Like your agent at wme.
Speaker 4 00:07:44 Wait,
Speaker 1 00:07:45 What? You said your agent? Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. Oh, age. Oh, your age. I was like, damn, they're double different over there. That's awesome. Kurt's old
Speaker 2 00:07:52 C has bad ears.
Speaker 1 00:07:53 <laugh>. He's not
Speaker 2 00:07:54 As old as me though.
Speaker 4 00:07:56 No, my, my agent just had a baby son. Don't think she's doing much for Disney.
Speaker 2 00:08:00 <laugh>. I mean, maybe get that baby on the track, you know. <laugh>, how'd
Speaker 3 00:08:04 You, uh, how'd you get connected? Gaga? How'd you get connected with our friends at wme? You said what? How did you get connected with our friends at wme? Like how did that all, what was that process? Yeah. To getting the big booking deal?
Speaker 4 00:08:14 So, so Sloan Cavi is, is my agent at wme along with Seth Siegel. But, um, Sloan actually saw the video very early on and, um, she, uh, she dmd me, which I never saw cause there was just so many dms coming in, like it was just kind of just shot down the line kind of thing. So at some point, um, she got in touch with the management that I signed with during that time, and that's how I met wme. And that's pretty much signed with them pretty much off the bat. I just, I like their energy. I love W nme. Um, the more people I've met, I haven't met a, a single one that's been bad. So I feel like I'm in a good place there. <laugh>.
Speaker 2 00:08:56 Absolutely. I think that's a big part of it is like finding the right team. Absolutely. People that believe in you Absolutely. And that you believe in Yep. And then grow together. Yeah. That's what it's about, right?
Speaker 4 00:09:03 Yeah. No, I mean, it's also like, you know, just sharing the same vision and, and just having somebody just kind of take a chance on whatever crazy vision and artist has. And so yes, they definitely, uh, they're definitely doing that right now and they've been doing it, so I'm, I'm thankful for it.
Speaker 3 00:09:18 <laugh>. So, so talking about wme, they obviously book your shows. What is the Laney Gardner show? Like if, for, for those of us that haven't been the one of your shows yet, how would you describe it and where have, like, have you been out doing a lot of shows or how does the calendar and stuff look? Uh,
Speaker 4 00:09:33 The, the biggest show that I did, I went on tour with the Jonas Brothers. Awesome
Speaker 2 00:09:39 Dude,
Speaker 4 00:09:39 That's awesome. It
Speaker 2 00:09:40 Was pretty big. I'd
Speaker 4 00:09:41 Say we've actually, we've actually got their dad out here, Kevin Jonas singing, Hey,
Speaker 1 00:09:45 Hey, how <laugh>
Speaker 4 00:09:47 And, uh, yeah, I got, I got that really cool opportunity and that was the biggest show I'd ever done. And, um, I mean, at, at first just, just kind of trying to get used to the stage. Um, most of it was just right around that mic. And then the more I got to do it, it was more, you know, kicking, kicking feet and just running across the stage and everything. So I'm, I'm kind of getting into the groove of things, but it's, it's nothing, it's nothing too special just yet. But hopefully with more live shows, it'll, it'll get, it'll get better. Lots of jumping
Speaker 1 00:10:18 Around. Were you playing like full band or were you
Speaker 4 00:10:20 Oh yeah. Full band. Yep. Oh yeah. I've, I have a lot of songs that sometimes with these writers' rounds I have, uh, an acoustic guitar and, um, kind of takes away a lot of the energy of the songs, but, um, it's still fun to do, but most of it is that high energy, like lot of instruments, a lot of organic instruments and stuff like that. So.
Speaker 1 00:10:42 Yeah. I know we talked a lot about like your Appalachian sound and, and the, and the roots nature of the music. But like, your songs will get you moving For sure. Thank you. Yeah. It's been fun to check them out. Yeah, it's been awesome.
Speaker 4 00:10:52 Rosen Wildfire is pretty good to, to play on acoustic. Yeah. That's one of the more like, chill songs, but I feel like it's still strong in its own way. It kind of just, it's strong to me cuz it, it feels like home, you know, singing it and, and of course writing it. So
Speaker 2 00:11:06 Yeah. Tell us about that. Who'd you write that with?
Speaker 4 00:11:08 I wrote that with, uh, Johnny Shore and Riley. I always screw up her name. I've yet to know how to correctly pronounce her name.
Speaker 1 00:11:19 <laugh>, except this is live. Also <laugh>. There's a bunch of people at the bar right now.
Speaker 3 00:11:23 Riley
Speaker 4 00:11:24 Riri, Riley Bader B Badger, something like that. The
Speaker 1 00:11:30 Beers, Riley, the Beers, uh, hey,
Speaker 4 00:11:32 She's, she's really cool. She's got a cool ass name, so cool that I cannot pronounce it. <laugh>
Speaker 2 00:11:37 <laugh>. Well, so that came out in March. And do you have a release date for your next track? Or are you still working on that?
Speaker 4 00:11:44 Um, we, we were gonna release in April, but I think we needed to just take a step back and kind of build some things out before we le released Anything else, just kind of strategize some things and, um, kind of put some more power behind it. And that way it's not, you know, just a random song coming out. Cause I, I want all my songs to mean something whenever they come out. And if I can, if I can make a song hit harder, then it could, then I'm gonna do it, you know? So yeah, just trying to make every, everything make sense, you know, <laugh> Yeah. Do that. I haven't had much of an opportunity to kind of do things like this and like do the whole like, I don't know what they call brandings. <laugh>. Yeah.
Speaker 3 00:12:23 I dunno. How long have you been in Nashville?
Speaker 4 00:12:25 I, uh, only for like, I think it's coming up on two years, but I was, I, I actually went to MTSU for, for three years and then Oh, right on. Dropped out. <laugh>.
Speaker 3 00:12:35 There you go. Murphy Murphysboro is fun shortly. Murphysboro is a good time. Hey.
Speaker 4 00:12:40 Hey. When you're a college student. Yeah. <laugh>,
Speaker 2 00:12:42 What is that bar that's there? The, like Dance Hall Whiskey,
Speaker 4 00:12:45 Dicks Whiskey,
Speaker 3 00:12:46 Dicks Saloon
Speaker 2 00:12:47 Free beer.
Speaker 4 00:12:48 Actually, actually just like
Speaker 3 00:12:49 11. Oh, you were just, yeah.
Speaker 2 00:12:50 What, what's a blessing?
Speaker 3 00:12:51 What's the vibe down there? Like?
Speaker 4 00:12:54 It's definitely a college town, but I don't know. I went, I went there the other day and I kind of was just taken back to college days, so I don't remember much of the night, but, um, it was fun.
Speaker 3 00:13:07 Oh yeah. Still fun. We like it when, when you get rowdy. We we're rowdy.
Speaker 4 00:13:11 Race, rowdy, come on.
Speaker 3 00:13:12 Absolutely. Let's go. For sure.
Speaker 2 00:13:15 So why don't we talk about like, dreams and like what that cover did for you, and like the evolution of how that, you know, got to be even bigger than just what it was. So just kind of run us through that, like, timeline wise, and
Speaker 4 00:13:28 I, I don't know, it, it is kind of a random cover, just like I did all the other covers that I'd ever done on, on YouTube. I, I really liked the song and I felt something from it. And, um, that's usually what I did whenever I posted anything on YouTube. Um, but Dreams, it was just like, it was actually, it was, it was a tough time for me during that time. Um, my music really wasn't moving anywhere and I kind of started to feel hopeless, but I knew I still loved music and it was like, I love this song, so I'm just gonna sing it and, you know, post it. So my mom and dad could see it back in Burnsville and my family could see it. And then, um, pretty shortly after it kind of started to blow up and I remember calling Mom while she was still at work and I'm like, what if it gets to 10,000 views? No
Speaker 3 00:14:19 Way. And then,
Speaker 4 00:14:19 And then it was like, mom, once it passed 10,000. Yeah. It was like, what if it gets to a hundred thousand? What if it gets to a million? And it just kept like passing those goals and it was just like, it kind of just gave me a sense of anything can happen at this point. So. Yeah. Well,
Speaker 2 00:14:37 It's one of those things too where like, once you have the eyes on you, then it's like, okay, now everything else that you're doing, all the original songs now get more attention. They have more eyes on them too. Yeah. So it's like, it's crazy. It's like the social media has been such a cheat code forever, but like, TikTok specifically and like reels and things like that, it's just, it's really taken it to another level. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. Yep.
Speaker 1 00:15:00 And I think Nicki always says too that there's a few things that it takes for an artist to really break. Um, one of those is a viral moment and you've absolutely had a viral moment. Yep. But having a unique voice, which you have great songs, which you have and a unique look. It's like you've got it all. Yeah.
Speaker 4 00:15:16 Thank you. Yeah, absolutely. Thank you.
Speaker 2 00:15:18 The pillars. Yeah, the pillars.
Speaker 1 00:15:20 It's important. <laugh>
Speaker 4 00:15:21 No, it, it was, uh, it, it was definitely a surreal moment and it was, I mean, I didn't know what the hell I was doing as an artist. It was just like, I like this kind of music and I like writing. And I mean, it was just very simple. And so whenever I started getting into the whole, like, you know, having interviews and like actually having to talk about myself, it was like, I really don't know what the, I don't know anything about myself. So I like, um, I changed the handle of my Instagram to like, who is Laney? And, um, it was kind of like a thing of signifying like, I really don't know who I am, but this is a big part of myself that's missing. So, you know, as an artist, um, or as a person both combined. So, I don't know. It's, yeah, I'm, I'm excited just to see like where everything goes and, and how I grow and how people grow around me and who takes inspiration from it and who fucking hates it and like, it <laugh>. Yeah.
Speaker 1 00:16:16 Well, there's no better way to get to know yourself than to Right. I feel like, say what? There's no better way to get to know yourself than to, right? Yeah. Yes.
Speaker 4 00:16:22 Yeah. For sure.
Speaker 1 00:16:23 So you're on the right track for sure. Yeah, for
Speaker 2 00:16:25 Sure. Have you played any rooms that have been like crazy yet? Or do you have anything scheduled? Like, just any like, pinch me moments or something? Anything like that?
Speaker 4 00:16:35 Like venues,
Speaker 2 00:16:35 Yeah.
Speaker 4 00:16:37 Um, the amphitheater and, well, it's not, well, it's not a room. Yeah,
Speaker 2 00:16:44 That's fine. Well, you were on tour with the Jonas brother. You're not playing small clubs, you're not playing around shit <laugh>.
Speaker 4 00:16:48 But everyone, everyone calls it Baby Red Rock. No, I had a lot of cool experiences with, with the Jonas brother. I mean, they, they definitely gave me a incredible opportunity. But it was the amphitheater out in Franklin that's impossible to get into and impossible to get out. Walk
Speaker 2 00:17:03 Your way out, baby. It's
Speaker 4 00:17:04 Awesome. It's off. I remember going there the first time before I ever played it for, uh, Greta Van Fleet. I'm a huge Greta Van Fleet fan. Hell yeah. And, um, it was an incredible show, but it was the first time I'd ever I'd ever been to that amphitheater. And, uh, Ubers were coming in there for like $300 just to get out. Jesus, Jesus. Just, just to get back to Nashville. And, uh, people were literally like posting up, like in the fields, just ready to go to sleep there. Like, everybody just lost hope. I mean, there was a ton of people there. Dark. Yeah. And we, we somehow got an Uber and, uh, there was like two kids that were like sitting there and it was a couple, and I was like, do y'all just want to hitch your ride with us? Because I mean, we've got two seats, so like, just come with us. I mean, it was crazy getting in and out of there. You know,
Speaker 2 00:17:48 It's a good show when you wake up in a field in Franklin <laugh>.
Speaker 3 00:17:51 Yes.
Speaker 4 00:17:53 It's like the good old days. Yeah. Yeah. That I don't know anything about, but I heard about back in the seventies. You will
Speaker 2 00:17:58 One day. <laugh>.
Speaker 3 00:18:00 Awesome. Well, where, where could people go to, uh, go to Fana on all the socials and what could people have to look forward to for the rest of this year? Now as we get into the summer months of 2023?
Speaker 2 00:18:09 Oh
Speaker 4 00:18:09 My God, I'm so ready for summer flying by. So ready for summer. I got a Jeep, so I get to take all the doors off and the tops off and everything. Um, I'm, I'm all over social media. I'm on, uh, Instagram and TikTok and YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, um, and I'm on all streaming platforms. Um, as for what to expect, a lot of new music is gonna come out. That's good. Hell
Speaker 2 00:18:35 Yeah. A lot of new music. Love
Speaker 4 00:18:36 That. It's been, it's been about two years I've been waiting, so I, uh, I definitely got a lot to show for it, so I'm ex I'm excited. So Love that. It's definitely gonna be like, you know, bluegrass and rock and country and
Speaker 2 00:18:49 The good stuff.
Speaker 4 00:18:50 All of it. Yeah. All the good stuff.
Speaker 2 00:18:53 <laugh>. All right. Well,
Speaker 3 00:18:54 Awesome. Well y'all give it up for our girl Lane Gardner, give up much. Woo.
Speaker 2 00:18:59 Thank you. Thank you so much for being our first ever live podcast, guys. Oh
Speaker 4 00:19:03 My God, thank you. Yeah. I've never done anything like this. This is interesting. Yeah. <laugh>. I was a little nervous
Speaker 2 00:19:06 <laugh>. Absolutely. Well get used to this. If you ever do radio interviews, cheers. They're like this, but they're better at interviewing <laugh>.
Speaker 3 00:19:13 Cheers.
Speaker 4 00:19:13 Cheers. Nah, y'all did a great job cheer. Thank you for having me cheer.
Speaker 2 00:19:15 Absolutely. Cheers.
Speaker 3 00:19:16 Cheers. Cheers. Sorry, I
Speaker 2 00:19:17 Don't have a, I don't have Oh no, we'll allow it. <laugh>.
Speaker 4 00:19:20 Do I get the hell off or
Speaker 2 00:19:22 Yeah, guys, give it up for Laney Gardner, come on. Woo. All right, thank you so much. And Matt, you wanna, uh, talk about our next guest that we have coming up? Well,
Speaker 3 00:19:35 Before that, I wanna give a shout out to everybody here at Live Oak. It's early in the night and we have this place packed out, which is freaking awesome. Y'all give a hand for yourselves. Woo. Why vote Music Row Best Bar in Nashville, Tennessee. Our friends from WME in the house, shout out to Sean and Austin helping us put this together. Yes. From wme ripping that luxurious raise already hat, by the way, we love seeing you in that. Austin, we

Speaker 2 00:20:19 All right, Kurt, let him get to stage. All right. Clear the path. <laugh>, dude. Welcome. <laugh>. Welcome brother. I guy. Come hang in our lawn chairs with us. Yeah.
Speaker 3 00:20:29 Luxurious <laugh>.
Speaker 2 00:20:30 Yeah, we are at, uh, we're in the woods. I don't know if you saw that, but Yeah, we
Speaker 3 00:20:33 Got the woods behind you. Make you feel at oh, Louisiana stuff.
Speaker 2 00:20:36 Want some this? Definitely camping. Would you like a beer? I try One.
Speaker 3 00:20:40 Ranch, <laugh>.
Speaker 2 00:20:43 Here we go. Here's the Bud Light. Hey, Joe.
Speaker 3 00:20:44 Hey,
Speaker 2 00:20:45 Joe. Deal. Yeah. What's
Speaker 5 00:20:47 Up y'all? Thank y'all, man. Man,
Speaker 2 00:20:48 Absolutely. So I've got to meet you a little bit through like Red Door, uh, with Megan, our good friend Megan. And, uh, got to hear your music of course, online before I got to meet you. And man, your world's been pretty crazy recently, huh?
Speaker 5 00:21:02 It's definitely different than, uh, swinging a Hammer, man.
Speaker 2 00:21:05 <laugh>. Yeah.
Speaker 1 00:21:07 I wouldn't know. <laugh>
Speaker 2 00:21:08 <laugh>. Kurt swings a hammer. It's just an electric hammer and it has strings on it. There you go.
Speaker 1 00:21:14 <laugh>.
Speaker 5 00:21:14 That's, that's what I do now too, man. Oh yeah, we're saying,
Speaker 2 00:21:18 I, I read a statistic that said that you wrote like over 3000 songs.
Speaker 5 00:21:23 Oh man. You know, I've had nothing else to do, so. Yes.
Speaker 2 00:21:27 Yeah. <laugh>. Hey man, that's what it's about.
Speaker 5 00:21:29 I kind of, I kind of tell it like it is and just whatever I'm living that day and kind of going through, I just write it down. I don't have the best memory. So Yeah. The only thing I can remember is songs. So I just write 'em down and put 'em in my memory and that way they'll remind me of the stupid shit I've done. Yeah.
Speaker 1 00:21:47 <laugh>. I think the first thing I take away from your music is like, this guy's living everything he's singing about. Yes. 110%. Absolutely. Yeah. Thank you brother. That's some real shit you're singing, dude. No doubt. Thank you,
Speaker 5 00:21:57 Man.
Speaker 2 00:21:58 Man, I think that's important. You know,
Speaker 1 00:22:00 Also when I listen to music and I, I hear this guy could probably beat my ass. <laugh>
Speaker 2 00:22:05 <laugh>, Louisiana, baby in the house,
Speaker 5 00:22:08 Man, I, I'm probably like a, that's only like on a real, real bad days. I don't have those very often anymore, so. Well, well, good.
Speaker 1 00:22:15 I'm glad to hear that. <laugh>.
Speaker 2 00:22:18 Well, well you've got been out on the road recently with, uh, Warren Zeider tour. Right? Tell us a little bit about that
Speaker 5 00:22:24 Man. You know, it's just such a cool camp, you know, I, like I said, I've been out on the road with a lot of different people and not this big of a tour, you know, but, uh, I've been out on the road with a lot of different people. I did a lot of, uh, stuff in Texas with a lot of Texas artists and stuff. Yeah. These guys are just so welcoming and, uh, we're actually going to play Top Golf tomorrow, you know, so it's like, oh heck. Even on days off we're, you know, when, when they want to, when, when they want to hang with you on days off, that's pretty cool, you know? Good sign. Yeah.
Speaker 1 00:22:51 That's a great sign.
Speaker 2 00:22:52 Yeah. That's when you know you're doing it, right? Yeah. That's
Speaker 5 00:22:54 It, brother.
Speaker 2 00:22:55 Well, let's talk about, uh, you recently, you've been one of the YouTube artists on The Rise too. How did that come about? And uh, how did they tell you about that? Anything, uh, the background of that?
Speaker 5 00:23:06 Well, I, man, I was, uh, we ride that song Yeah. Came out. So I think right around the time that I was writing and doing these different songs that I've got a lot of songs that just hit real hard and they get real deep. Yeah. I think that sometimes it's, it's, you just, people wanna have a good time. And then sometimes as a writer, I'm like, I don't wanna make myself miserable today to try to write this other song, so let's have a good time. And me and my, me and my drummer Burn, we're sitting there and we was at the house and I said, man, I just, I'm gonna let, I'm gonna let one fly. I had, oh, 85 Chevrolet. And I was talking about, uh, how I traded it for a dirt track car back in the day, <laugh>. And I was like, man, I wanna, I wanna ride one, just, I wanna throw a 85 Chevy and something, you know? And he's like, let's do it. It started off with that long wheel well happen. No, next thing I know, I was like, shit, that might be a big song.
Speaker 2 00:23:59 <laugh>. That's awesome. It's, it's crazy, man. Like, the power that you have of people getting to hear, even just a clip before the song comes out now is so powerful. It lets people connect to it on a different level and feel like they're a part of the journey.
Speaker 5 00:24:13 So I think that that's the power of social media, but more than that, it's the power of, uh, you know, being able to connect with your audience and to have like what you have and what y'all have with Rayd Rowdy, you know, it's about bringing that connection to the crowd before even sometimes before the music even gets to 'em. You know, they'll find, they'll find your podcast before they find us, and then, uh, they'll go look us up, and then they're like, oh man, I found that on Rayd Rowdy. You know? So I, I know I found a lot of artists that way. Yeah. And, uh, heck yeah, it's, I think it's so cool that social media has such a big imprint and impact on, uh, letting a lot of people live their life and bring the real through that. Back in the day, you just had to have, you had to have a whole different set of things going on for you, you know?
Speaker 1 00:25:01 Yeah. And it allows artists really to make a living without having like the record deal, like how it used to be or whatever. It's like, there's so many avenues to like, earn revenue with like, YouTube and all this other shit. It's, it's a, it's really in a lot of ways, it's a great time to be an artist, I think, in that regard, you know what I mean?
Speaker 5 00:25:19 It really is, man. I think that, like my baby, I got babies at home, so I got four babies. And to be able to go on Facebook and post the reel and them send me a check at the end of the month, I'm going, what
Speaker 2 00:25:31 <laugh>? Hell yeah.
Speaker 3 00:25:32 That's pretty, that's pretty good. I
Speaker 1 00:25:33 Haven't got any checks for my reels yet, but, uh,
Speaker 2 00:25:35 Babe, I think we got 90 bucks one time. That was
Speaker 5 00:25:37 Cool. Just use my song on one man. Yeah.
Speaker 2 00:25:40 Oh yeah, dude, we messing up. It's a win-win.
Speaker 3 00:25:42 So, so I gotta ask you, so Louisiana as a guy that's been out touring, um, as a crew member and stuff, Louisiana's always been one of my favorite places to go. The crowds rowdy are the crowds are rowdy. Yes. They appreciate good music of, of the mix of what comes outta Texas, what comes outta Nashville here. But I love the food in Louisiana, man. There's nothing like doing a show in Monroe, Louisiana in March when it's crawfish season. Cra crawfish season, man. If you
Speaker 2 00:26:06 What? Food? Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 3 00:26:08 You pull up to a gas station somewhere in Louisiana and they got the fixings in there. What are you putting on your plate? Cause you got like boot am balls, duck tacos jumping on
Speaker 2 00:26:17 My plate. You're
Speaker 3 00:26:18 Taking it all. You're putting it all, you're spending the,
Speaker 5 00:26:19 I'm making a mulligan
Speaker 2 00:26:20 Making hungry <laugh>.
Speaker 3 00:26:22 Do you miss back home a lot being up here now?
Speaker 5 00:26:25 Well, yeah, it's, I do, man. I, no offense to the crawfish up here, but they sell it all season long. It don't taste good. <laugh>
Speaker 2 00:26:33 <laugh>, no shit. We get the bootle crawfish up here, <laugh>. It's kinda
Speaker 5 00:26:37 Like eating me. Oh, I'm just, I was gonna pick on Joe. He always telling me, he is like, you gotta steam that stuff. I was like, no, man. You got a bullet.
Speaker 2 00:26:46 Oh
Speaker 5 00:26:46 Boy.
Speaker 3 00:26:47 And, and speak. And speaking of Louisiana, you, you recently put out a song with one of the, kind of the, the Godfathers of Louisiana music, the Mr. Mr. Kuk himself, Mr. Frank Foster. Um, if you had a, if you had a, a pretty long relationship with him. Cause I feel like a, like I know he was involved with Laney Wilson early on. I know there's folks that have come out of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, that Frank has taken under his wing. How, how has that been for you?
Speaker 5 00:27:10 Man, me and Frank were both in the oil field, you know, so Frank came out of the oil field and when he came out, um, I used to go out and watch, I used to list through his stuff back when he was still doing what I was doing. I was singing in a crew house and, uh, sitting in a change room. And I remember him doing, you know, all these shows. And I was like, man, if he can make it out of it, man, I, I can make it out of it. And I remember in ear early years, you know, he gave me that old roughneck talk. He said, no offense bud. He's like, you're a great rider, but ain't nobody gonna line up and see you up your ass. <laugh>
Speaker 2 00:27:42 <laugh>.
Speaker 5 00:27:43 And so then 10 years later he called me up and he is like, Hey man. He's like, uh, how you been doing? I said, I'm, I'm still hanging in there. He said, you still on the rig? And I said, nah man, I'm doing this music thing for a living. I said, I know they ain't gonna line up Sea Mug ass, but, uh, I'm still doing <laugh>. And then I, and then he says, we got on a song together with, uh, poet Snow Souls. And I said, man, you know, I know you've lived this one long enough. And I I, I'm just now getting a good taste of it. I said, as far as like living it and writing it and going out there and working and getting in the cellar with those guys, I had an oilfield dad back in the day and his band played on that song. Wow. And, uh, so he was, you know, it's one of those deals where it's just all full circle man. Yeah. And now, you know, we're, we're the, you know, real good friends. But I think it's more of a respect of just seeing that, you know, don't give up whatever you're doing, just keep pushing and on. Sometimes the heroes you looked up to, they'll start looking up to you and it's some mutual respect from then on out, you know? I
Speaker 2 00:28:43 Love that. Yeah. Tell us, uh, about the album. So you just dropped your second album, uh, most recently. Uh, tell us about poets and Old Souls and what it's done for you and what it's meant for your live show.
Speaker 5 00:28:55 Well, poets and Old Souls, actually Miss Helen's right here, she, uh, is one of the writers on the song,
Speaker 2 00:29:02 Hey
Speaker 5 00:29:02 <laugh>, you know, me and her and Scott Shine White. That was the first co-write I ever done. Wow. Thank, yeah. So Holy, I've done, you know, I I, I've done a lot of writing back in Louisiana and, and when I came to town I said, I really wanna write this for the other writers. Cuz I started seeing the rounds around here and I thought, man, there's so much talent, but, you know, nobody's really hearing the words and paying attention. You know, I think, you know, in a party town writers are writing about real life stuff that they're going through. It's just like working a day job. Yeah. And sometimes in a party town, it's hard to get that message out there. And so when I went in the room with them, them, I said, look, why don't we tell our story whether they want to hear it or not.
Speaker 5 00:29:44 Let's just tell what it's like being a poet, you know? Yeah. About being a writer. And sometimes we catch an ear and we change a life. Sometimes we catch an ear and we make you dance. You know, so it's like, let's write about that. And I think that that's my approach as an artist too, is to know that I always started out as a writer, never started out to be an artist, still got social anxiety. And uh, that's what I'll always be. So I always want to incorporate that from now here on out. You know,
Speaker 1 00:30:12 I think a lot of artists started out that way too. And it just makes it a lot easier, you know what I mean? It's like, it's easier to perform songs that you've lived even before you've written them. And I think that when fans are watching you on stage singing about your life, they feel more connected to you in that way. So it kind of just greases the gears and gets everything going, you know?
Speaker 5 00:30:34 It really does, man. It's, it's, uh, all about how you put it and knowing that you've lived it. And if you haven't lived it, you better get ready to live it. You know? I think I really believe in that too. Like, don't write something you ain't lived or you ain't ready to live. Cuz I really believe you will. And
Speaker 1 00:30:50 There's a lot of people that are writing songs that haven't lived any life yet, and it's, it could be hard to be an artist in that respect just because it's like, what do I sing about? You know? It's, I think like Nashville tends to gravitate towards people that have something to say, that have lived that part of life. And it's awesome to hear you like, sing about what you know, which is, you know, the real shit, you know, <laugh>. Yeah. Man,
Speaker 2 00:31:12 There's nothing better than true stories and songs about life, man. You know, that's what makes people relate to him and that's what makes the difference between a good song and a great song is Hell Yeah. When people hear it.
Speaker 5 00:31:23 I l you know, like Billy Joe Shaver, I think I was up here last night playing, and, uh, one of the guys that was playing with me and Skinny and a couple other guys, he was, uh, Billy Joe's, uh, guitar player. I said, man, that was one of my heroes, man. And I, I remember the first time I found out that, uh, Wayland didn't write hon to Keyes. And I was like, I was looking and I was like, well, who wrote it? And then you go looking at towns of Anza and all the guys that wrote these songs, you going, oh shit, that's what I got to look forward to.
Speaker 1 00:31:55 <laugh> <laugh>, I'm gonna be a,
Speaker 5 00:31:56 I'm gonna be an alcoholic. I'm gonna wind up getting in VA fast, getting thrown in jail, <laugh>
Speaker 3 00:32:02 L Louisiana. Shit,
Speaker 5 00:32:04 Shit. Well, I was like, well, uncle Bill, he's the same way so he don't write songs, so at least I can make some money at it. <laugh>,
Speaker 3 00:32:10 Speaking of things to look forward to, you've got a lot going on right now. You got a lot coming up and, um, a lot of it has to do with your agency and your team. How'd you get linked up with the, with the folks at wme wme
Speaker 5 00:32:21 Wme WME in the house? Man, I, I'm really, really thankful for that. Um, to be honest with you, man, I, it wasn't like eight months ago, I think had a, had a few people tell me, oh, you're not on such and such as level and you're not this, that and the other. And, and I've been living so long doing this that when I left my job to hear somebody say, well you gotta be at this level before we'll work with you and this, that and the other. I was like, all right, so what do I gotta do? I just wake up and I go just like a hammer. I'm gonna swing that guitar around and I'm gonna try to make up for 10 years in one year. And we did. I love that.
Speaker 1 00:32:59 Yes, dude. Just like a hammer. That's a title. Write that down
Speaker 5 00:33:01 Just like a hammer.
